Keeping Your Emotions Balanced at Work

Regardless of where you work or what you do for a living, the workplace can be a very stressful environment. Venting your frustrations or displaying antagonistic behavior when triggered can lead to serious repercussions. So what can you do to control your negative emotions and prevent creating a hostile work environment?

Expert Beacon featured an article written by Kimberly Friedmutter which provides useful advice for those in the workplace who have a problem keeping their feelings in check.

According to Friedmutter, following these simple tips can help you keep your cool and most importantly, keep your job:

  • know the difference between inappropriate and appropriate
  • take yourself away from the trigger
  • remember that emotions pass
  • a simple exercise
  • communicate your needs to others

Friedmutter also cautions that if you do have an outburst or demonstrate inappropriate behavior at work, don’t blame others and don’t forget to apologize for your lack of decorum.  She also advises that due to some recent serious incidents featured in the media, it is extremely important to do whatever you can to ensure a amicable and tranquil workplace:

“There is a heightened sensitivity to workplace behavior and enrollment in anger management courses are soaring. Stress is high and tolerance is low. Do yourself and those around you a favor by keeping your emotions balanced.”
